Cards Briefs: BankAmerica Unit Shifts To Client/Server System

BA Merchant Services Inc., the merchant processing subsidiary of BankAmerica Corp., has started using an internal system it says is more responsive to merchant needs.

The system is based on client/server computing that is said to be more flexible and easier to integrate with other parts of the operation.

BA Merchant Services, which annually processes 300 million credit and debit transactions totaling $24 billion, said it previously relied on a combination of platforms for processing merchant card transactions.

The new system was designed by Verifone Inc., Redwood City, Calif. Sharif Bayyari, chief executive officer of BA Merchant Services, said it "will give us the flexibility we need to respond to our merchants' needs."
