Chase Manhattan Corp. Raids Salomon Bros. for Chief Economist

Chase Manhattan Corp. Monday named John Lipsky chief economist, luring talent from Salomon Brothers to beef up its financial markets team.

Mr. Lipsky, 49, will report to Thomas G. Labrecque, president and chief operating officer. He also will serve as a director of Chase's Global Bank, reporting to Donald H. Layton, vice chairman.

In his new positions, Mr. Lipsky will oversee the banking company's economic and financial-markets research for various lines of business.

"Our goal is to build a world-class economic and financial-markets research team. John can make that happen," Mr. Layton said.

Richard C. Aspinwall, who had been chief economist, was named to the new position of director of public policy research, reporting to Mr. Labrecque.

He will provide the bank's senior management with research and advice on legislative and regulatory matters affecting the financial services industry.

Mr. Lipsky, who was named chief economist at Salomon Brothers in 1992 following the retirement of Henry Kaufman, joined the Wall Street firm in 1984.

Prior to that he spent 10 years as an official of the International Monetary Fund.
