Capital Briefs: House Banking Panel Sets Asia Hearings

The House Banking Committee has scheduled hearings on the Asian financial crisis for Jan. 30 and Feb. 3.

Scheduled to testify at the first hearing are Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan, Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin, Treasury Deputy Secretary Lawrence H. Summers, and private economists. The second hearing will feature business and labor representatives, but witnesses have not been confirmed yet.

Banking Committee Chairman Jim Leach leaves today on a fact-finding trip to Japan, South Korea, China, and Hong Kong. Accompanying him are fellow committee members Bruce Vento, D-Minn., Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., Ken Bentsen, D-Texas, and Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Ill. The delegation is scheduled to meet with South Korean President-elect Kim Dae Jung and other government officials and business leaders.
