Card Briefs: System Handles Mondex Transactions in Canada

Applied Communications Inc. said it has upgraded its widely used Base24 transaction processing software to handle Mondex smart card transactions in Canada.

The move makes its possible for financial institutions to fully integrate chip cards into their electronic banking systems, said ACI, a subsidiary of Transaction Systems Architects Inc.

Applied Communications Canada Inc., Toronto, designed and built the Canadian enhancements. Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce was the first customer to install them. The bank relies on Base24 in personal computer and telephone banking, automated teller machines, and point of sale systems.

"This added functionality is an outgrowth of our work with ACI in the Guelph smart card launch," said Philip D. Kelly, the bank's director of Mondex projects, referring to the pilot city west of Toronto.
