Compass Banks Names Executive

Compass Banks of Texas, Houston, a unit of Compass Bancshares in Birmingham, Ala., has elected Patrick S. Bolin as a director.

Mr. Bolin was a founding director of $335 million-asset Fidelity Bank, Dallas, which Compass bought in February. He is also chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Eagle Oil & Gas Co. and chairman and CEO of Beacon National Insurance Co.

The bank also hired John DiFede as a senior vice president and promoted Curtis R. Burchard and Larry A. Tharp to that rank.

Mr. DiFede will be manager of retail banking in San Antonio; he was the East Dallas district manager of small and middle-market business banking at Bank of America.

Mr. Burchard and Mr. Tharp work in Compass of Texas' energy lending group. Mr. Burchard is the division manager responsible for providing services to independent oil and gas companies; Mr. Tharp is manager of petroleum engineering.

In addition, the bank has hired Michael L. Johnson as a vice president and promoted Caroline Gayeske to that rank. Mr. Johnson will work in retail investment in Houston; he was a broker at Amherst Securities amd earlier co-founded First Investors Financial Services. Ms. Gayeske is the senior operations officer at the Waco branch.
