Two Firms Team Up On Fingerprint Devices

IFS International Inc. and Biometric Access Corp. of Austin, Tex., are developing home banking and point of sale devices that recognize cardholders' fingerprints.

The point of sale devices would cost $300 to $500, depending on volume, while the home banking units would cost $199.

The products are intended to prevent fraud and perhaps one day eliminate the need for cards by relying entirely on customers' physiological traits.

The devices should be available by the end of this year, said Hal Jennings, Biometric Access' vice president of marketing and technical support.

Biometric Access' SecureTouch products are to be incorporated into IFS' TPII payment card processing system. The companies plan to sell to retailers and financial institutions, including regional and national banks in the United States and abroad.
