Card Briefs: NCR Installs Britain's 1st Drive-Through ATM

NCR Corp. said it has introduced Britain's first drive-through automated teller machine. The machine, at London's Heathrow Airport, is owned by Barclays Bank PLC, which is testing it for six months.

"Drive-through ATMs are the next step in convenience banking in the United Kingdom," said Per-Olof Loof, senior vice president of NCR's financial solutions group.

"Research carried out by NCR in the United States revealed that consumers are at least 20% more likely to use a machine they can access from their car, than one they have to approach on foot," Mr. Loof said. "With the United Kingdom becoming increasingly mobile, we expect a similarly positive response on that side of the Atlantic."

In North America, 5,000 drive-through ATMs were shipped in 1997 alone, according to NCR.
