In Brief: Senate Panel's Reform Hearing Lengthened

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Alfonse M. D'Amato on Thursday added a second day of testimony to next week's hearings on financial reform legislation.

On June 17, Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin and Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan will square off. The two agencies disagree on where new bank powers should be housed, with Treasury arguing for bank operating subsidiaries and the Fed insisting it would be safer to wall off these activities in holding company units.

Witnesses for the June 18 hearing have not been announced.
