In Brief: U.S. Settles Indiana Goodwill Suit for $50M

The government has settled another goodwill case, agreeing to pay Union Federal Savings Bank of Indianapolis $50 million.

News of the June 24 deal surfaced Thursday. It followed the government's $39 million settlement earlier this week with Statesman Group, the parent of a failed Iowa thrift.

Like Statesman, Union Federal agreed to acquire four ailing thrifts from the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corp. The agency permitted Union Federal to count $77.2 million in goodwill as capital. When Congress revoked these deals in 1989, dozens of thrifts sued.
