Mobil Expands Speedpass System

Mobil Corp. announced a major expansion in its smart- card-like Speedpass system, which lets customers pay for gasoline without opening wallets or purses for credit cards or cash.

On July 6, 900 locations were added to the program, bringing the total equipped with Speedpass technology to more than 3,300 out of 7,700 Mobil- branded service stations in the United States.

Customers are given free radio-frequency transponders, which they can carry on key rings or mount on car windows. They automatically arrange for payment, usually by credit card.

Since the Speedpass was introduced in 20 cities last year, more than 1.5 million motorists have enrolled. With the latest introductions in Dallas/Fort Worth, Milwaukee, and Las Vegas, all of Mobil's major domestic gasoline marketing areas are covered.
