Capital Briefs: GAO: Uncle Sam on Hook for $6 Trillion

Obligations and assets of the 22 financial services agencies and enterprises backed by the federal government total $6 trillion, the General Accounting Office said Friday.

The figure does not include the national debt.

The organizations include the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp., and Farm Credit System. Eleven of them lend money; nine provide insurance; and seven engage in secondary market activities.
