Card Briefs: Capital One Opens First Office in Europe

Capital One Financial Corp. has opened an operations center in Nottingham, England.

The facility is the monoline card issuer's first in Europe and reflects its interest in expanding internationally. Capital One, which has 13 million customers, said the operation, which it is calling Trent House, will "act as a springboard into continental European markets."

Capital One has moved 130 workers into Trent House, and expects to have up to 900 there by 2000. The office performs application processing, customer relations, product design and marketing, collections, business development, and data base management.

"This is a major step forward for Capital One, as it places us firmly on the European financial services map," said Richard Fairbank, Capital One's chairman and chief executive officer. "Trent House will provide us with the necessary infrastructure to underpin the rapid growth of our business."
