In Brief: House Votes for Bigger FHA Loans

Supporters of an expanded government mortgage-insurance program won another victory with Wednesday's vote by the House for higher FHA loan limits.

Lawmakers agreed to allow the Department of Housing and Urban Development's FHA program to insure loans as large as $197,620 in high-cost areas, and up to $109,032 in the cheapest housing markets. A similar measure was approved by the Senate this month.

The measures are contained in fiscal year 1999 appropriations bills for HUD. President Clinton has threatened to veto the bill for unrelated reasons.
