Tech Bytes: 2 Hired by Firm Selling Face-Recognition System

Two consultants have been named to the senior management team of Mr. Payroll Corp., a company in the vanguard of facial biometrics with a system that identifies check cashers at unmanned kiosks.

Neil S. Chernoff, previously head of his own information technology consulting firm and before that a consultant at CSC Index, was named senior vice president and chief technology officer.

Kenneth E. Rees, most recently the head of CSC Index's financial services practice for the West, was named senior vice president and chief operations officer.

Both also previously held positions at Booz-Allen & Hamilton Inc.

Mr. Payroll, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cash America International Inc., installed the world's first self-service check-cashing machine last summer. Through facial biometrics, the kiosks let people with or without bank accounts cash checks 24 hours a day with no photo identification.

In little over a year, 52 machines have been installed in 15 states in venues ranging from banks to supermarkets to convenience stores. The machines have cashed more than 200,000 checks for more than $60 million.

Cash America's consolidated revenues last year were $303 million. Mr. Payroll's revenues are not reported separately.
