Card Briefs: Schlumberger Opens Card Plant in Mexico

Schlumberger announced the official opening of its Mexico City card production facility, which it said is the largest of its kind in the country.

The French company said it is making a "strong commitment" because of the "enormous potential" it sees in the Mexican market, where it has 18 bank customers.

The monthly production and personalization capacity is five million magnetic-stripe cards, five million smart cards, and 30 million checks.

Schlumberger, which last year built the first Latin American smart card factory, added the Mexican facility as part of an expansion designed to "strengthen our leadership," said Eric Claudel, general manager for Mexico and Central America, Schlumberger Test and Transactions.

"Although we see an incredible future for smart card deployment in the financial segment, we are also developing new offers for other segments, such as telecommunications, health, loyalty, and government," he added.
