Capital Briefs: Chalmers P. Wylie, Ex-Congressman, Dies

Chalmers P. Wylie, the former Ohio congressman who served as House Banking's ranking Republican during the S&L crisis, died Friday. He was 77.

"Chalmers Wylie represented a unique and perhaps bygone era in American politics," said the committee's current chairman, Iowa Republican James A. Leach. Mr. Wylie was "a public servant who was a quiet war hero and gentleman legislator," he said.

Mr. Wylie was first elected to the House in 1966, after three terms in the Ohio legislature. He retired from the House in 1992.
