Tech Bytes: GTE Certificates for HP Security Software

Hewlett-Packard Co. said GTE's Cybertrust certificate-authority products have been added to the HP Praesidium program for Internet commerce security.

GTE Internetworking, a Needham Heights, Mass., unit of GTE Corp., said its Cybertrust Global Provider CA and Enterprise CA would be integrated with Hewlett-Packard's Virtual Vault.

GTE has thus joined a growing list of strategic partners in the Praesidium framework. Also in the digital-certificate area, HP struck a deal with Verisign Inc. to offer its Global Server ID system with 128-bit data encryption through Virtual Vault.

"GTE and HP have made a joint commitment to make it easier for customers to obtain end-to-end security solutions for electronic business applications with best-of-breed products," said Ron Langill, vice president of strategic alliances and global channels at GTE Cybertrust.

In a related area, GTE's digital certificates were the first to be rated under a program sponsored by NetDox Inc. of Deerfield, Ill. A unit of Deloitte & Touche-the accounting firm that helped organize NetDox-evaluated the GTE certificates, and they were assigned an AA rating. That makes a customer eligible for $25,000 in identity insurance from NetDox in addition to $50,000 covering message integrity.

"Identity binding is a critical issue on the Internet," said Dean Coclin, Cybertrust's manager of business development. "Our customers will recognize the NetDox rating as a trusted credential for business via the Internet."
