Card Briefs: Chairman of Europay To Serve Another Term

Europay International said Kurt Richolt has been reelected chairman of its board for a three-year term commencing in April.

Mr. Richolt, 58, became chairman in 1993, a year after Europay was formed through the merger of the Eurocard and Eurocheque cooperatives. Europay is considered one of the Big Three international payment associations, along with Visa and MasterCard, and is closely allied with MasterCard.

Mr. Richolt was a member of the board of managing directors of Commerzbank in Germany from 1984 until mid-1993. He was an investment banker early in his career at Commerzbank and at two London institutions. He worked continuously for Commerzbank since 1970 and was joint manager of the Hamburg branch before becoming a deputy managing director in 1982.

Europay chief executive officer Louis-Noel Joly said the company's growth in Spain, where it "broke up Visa's card-issuance monopoly, is yet another example of how (Mr. Richolt's) leadership and professionalism have contributed to Europay's position as the European banks' preferred provider."
