In Brief: PNC to Test Two Internet Billing Systems

PNC Bank Corp. announced two Internet billing pilot tests, one with Checkfree Corp. and one with its rival, TransPoint, formerly known as MSFDC.

The separate bill presentment programs are aimed at the consumer and corporate markets, respectively. Bank officials expect that the Integrion Financial Network, which PNC partly owns, will eventually mediate between the Checkfree and TransPoint systems.

Checkfree, which already supplies electronic bill payment for PNC's on- line banking customers, will present bills to the bank's employee-testers via the Web.

TransPoint will deliver bills over the Internet to small-business customers of Xerox Corp., one of PNC's corporate customers. PNC will use its remittance processing capabilities to integrate TransPoint bill payment information into accounts receivable files for Xerox.

PNC's arrangement with Xerox comes on the heels of another agreement to give the copier giant's middle-market customers Web-based electronic data interchange transactions.
