Card Briefs: Marketer, Fleet Settle Infringement Lawsuit

Meridian Enterprises Corp. settled a patent infringement lawsuit with Gulf Oil Co. and Fleet Financial Group, which has agreed to pay Meridian licensing fees.

In August, BankAmerica Corp. and Sun Co. settled with the marketing company, which holds a patent on a process for crediting electronic rebates to cardholders.

The Gulf-Fleet deal is Meridian's 15th out-of-court settlement of a patent infringement suit. One suit remains pending, against Chase Manhattan Bank and its cobranding partner Shell Oil Co.
