Short Takes: Hartford's Funds Unit Exceeds $1B of Assets

The Hartford, which launched a proprietary mutual fund family 18 months ago, said it amassed $1 billion of assets under management as of Jan. 20.

The insurance company created its eight Hartford Mutual Funds as an investment complement to its variable annuities. According to the insurer, Strategic Insight, a New York-based research firm, has recognized the portfolios as the first open-end fund family ever to reach $1 billion of assets in less than 18 months.

The Hartford Mutual Funds equity portfolios are managed by Wellington Management Co., which also manages the investment options within Hartford's variable annuities. The family's bond funds are managed by Hartford Investment Management Co.
