Smart Bits: Conn. Firm, 3G Worked on Air Force Card

Product Technologies Inc. said it teamed up with the smart card development firm 3G International Inc. on the multiple- application system installed at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

The Falcon Card program, rolled out in May, includes Product Technologies' SmartCity electronic purse platform. The system is said to be the first carrying independently loaded applications and conforming to EMV, the Europay-MasterCard-Visa standard for card-reading terminals.

"The goal is to allow the Air Force Academy to continue to add nonfinancial applications, such as medical and dental, while ensuring the security of the EMV-compliant platform," said 3G International president Thomas L. Gregg.

"The system was also designed to allow the Falcon Card to be independent yet interoperable with the Department of Defense smart card program," he added.
