In Brief: FDIC Cracks Down on Small Bank in Ala.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said it has issued a cease-and- desist order against First Bank of Childersburg in Vincent, Ala.

Among other deficiencies, the $60 million-asset bank was cited for failing to "take appropriate measures" to make sure its systems are year- 2000 compliant. The FDIC also charged First Bank with failing to provide "adequate supervision and direction over the affairs of the bank by the board of directors" and for engaging in unsafe lending practices. An FDIC spokesman would not comment on the order, which took effect Aug. 10 but was released last week.

First Bank was advised to retain qualified management and rewrite its lending policy. Its management also was ordered to ascertain that the bank's computers would be ready for the millennium. Bank officials referred questions to president and chief executive officer Dan W. Cleckler, who did not return calls.
