Smart Bits: Gemplus to Support Smart Cards in China

Gemplus said it is the latest smart card company with an agreement to support China's adoption of the technology.

Gemplus said it will be supplying hardware and software to the People's Bank of China Bank Card Certification Center, which will manage technical compliance with the specifications for integrated circuit cards.

The world's largest chip card producer said it will be applying advanced techniques including object-oriented programming and the Java language.

"We have been interested in and impressed by the system proposed by Gemplus and believe it will help us to strengthen and improve the process in certifying IC cards," said Liu Yongchun, deputy general director of People's Bank's department of payment and science and technology.

Separately, Gemplus said it had been certified by Mondex International to produce cards for the Multos operating platform.

The so-called type approval applies to the first Multos systems on the market, and Gemplus has or is acquiring other approvals and licenses.
