Our First Issue

Welcome to the first issue of Turning Points, a magazine dedicated to exploring the career issues facing almost everyone in financial services.

Each month, Turning Points will serve up a mix of stories aimed at helping you manage your career in a rapidly changing field. Among the regular topics: skills building, compensation trends, and the new requirements for success.

The stories will be geared to everyone from high-ranking executives to entry-level employees. And they will span the full array of financial services-banking, brokerage, insurance, and more. As these businesses become increasingly intertwined, so do many of the most promising career tracks.

Of course, career management also has a personal side. Today's employee must balance a career with responsibilities to family and one's sense of self-fulfillment. In the coming months, we will explore those themes thoroughly.

A few words about the name, Turning Points. We were looking for a metaphor that addressed individuals in transition, either within their current organizations or beyond. And we couldn't help but notice that the name was also an apt description of the financial services industry itself.

Anita Lands, a New York-based career consultant, sums up the times when she says "the reciprocal relationship between employer and employee no longer exists. People will have to be far more proactive in managing their affairs than in the past."

Turning Points is sure to be a useful tool in that quest, helping you make the very most of yourself. That, in turn, can only contribute to a better, more competitive financial services industry. In that sense, the mission of this new publication is right in line with that of our 161-year- old flagship, American Banker.
