Hypercom, Visa Cut Authorization Times in Turkey

Hypercom Corp. said it has exceeded goals for lowering card authorization times in a pilot program with Visa International and three Turkish banks.

As part of a Visa campaign to upgrade systems in emerging markets, Hypercom aimed to reduce 35-second transaction times to 15 seconds using its point of sale terminals and Integrated Enterprise Network controllers.

The results came in at under nine seconds.

Garanti Bank, IsBank, and Pamuk Bank participated in the pilot, with Hypercom T7P terminals at a supermarket and petroleum retailer. Hypercom said the achievement is significant to meet the needs of a fast-growing market like Turkey.

Visa projects its card total there will rise to 24 million in 2001 from 10 million, and merchant locations to 175,000 from 81,000.
