American Express Serving Up Catering Promotion

American Express Co. is offering help to its card-accepting restaurants by promoting catering services.

In the Catering and Private Party program, the New York-based company will help restaurateurs reach American Express customers through newspaper advertising and postcards.

The program will let restaurants "expand their local marketing efforts and tap into a new customer base," said Bruce Bozzi Jr., a sales manager for Palm Restaurant in New York.

Separately, American Express said it has added a buyer protection service for its platinum and gold cards.

Known as the Return Protection Plan, it will provide refunds within 90 days of purchase for items from stores that do not accept returns. American Express will refund the full purchase price up to $300 per item and up to $1,000 per year.

According to the card company's research, 11% of consumers returned gifts they received during the holiday season last year.
