Capital Briefs: D'Amato Neck-and-Neck with New York Foe

A weekend poll showed Senate Banking Committee Chairman Alfonse M. D'Amato in a dead heat with Rep. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.

The poll, conducted Oct. 23-24 by Zogby International on behalf of the New York Post and the local Fox television affiliate, showed Sen. D'Amato, a third-term Republican, and his challenger each receiving 40.3% of the vote in the upcoming Senate race.

John Zogby, president and chief executive of the polling firm, said Rep. Schumer dominated New York City by 56% to 35%, while Sen. D'Amato held a 47% to 32% lead upstate. In the New York City suburbs, a "swing vote" area where Sen. D'Amato held a 15 percentage point lead one week earlier, Rep. Schumer moved into the lead.

Of the approximately 700 people polled over the weekend, 16.5% were undecided. The margin of error for the poll was plus or minus 3.8%.
