ABN Amro NV, the parent company of Chicago-based LaSalle National Bank, has joined the growing number of foreign banks opening offices in Beijing.

The bank said it has obtained approval from Chinese regulators to open a branch there, and it plans to do so during the first quarter of 1999.

The Dutch bank first opened an office in Hong Kong in 1906. Over the last several years, it has set up more branches in Hong Kong, as well as in Shanghai and Shenzhen, and representative offices in Guangzhou, Tianjin, and Wuhan.
