Tech Bytes: Canada Firm Can Export Strong Encryption

Chrysalis-ITS, a leading provider of network security technology, said it has received Canadian government clearance to export data encryption systems with hard-to-crack key lengths of 128 bits.

The permit makes financial institutions in 89 countries eligible to buy the LunaCA certificate authority system, putting Chrysalis-ITS on a equal footing with U.S. companies that have been cleared to export strong encryption for banking and financial applications.

"The news should be very encouraging to other Canadian companies attempting to export strong cryptography," said Alan Pickering, a former Canadian information technology security official.

Chrysalis' Luna hardware can now be bundled in systems sold overseas by marketing partners such as Baltimore Technologies, Entrust Technologies, and Verisign.
