Short Takes: Schwab, E-Trade Offer New On-Line Services

Discount brokers Charles Schwab & Co. and E-Trade Group unveiled new on-line tools for investors this week.

Schwab, in San Francisco, rolled out a service called Positions Monitor, which will let investors track the historical performance of their personal mutual fund and equity holdings.

Customers will have access to data from Standard & Poor's, Morningstar, and First Call, Schwab said in a statement.

E-Trade is offering a new service called Power Search, a mutual fund research tool available through the Palo Alto, Calif., company's Mutual Fund Center, which offers 4,000 funds. Power Search will also use Morningstar research, as well as software provided by an America Online Inc. subsidiary to let investors access a range of criteria on mutual funds, a company statement said.
