Card Brief: Gemplus Can Export Card Security System

Gemplus Americas said its GemSafe smart-card- based network security system has gotten export approval from the Commerce Department.

The approval smooths the way for GemSafe sales without the need for additional export licenses.

Gemplus also announced that support for GemSafe, which delivers electronic authentication through a smart card and reader on a personal computer, will be built into future versions of Microsoft's Windows NT operating system. As a result, GemSafe will be the first system of its kind compatible with both Microsoft and Netscape Internet software and the logging-on procedure of Windows NT 5.0, which is being renamed Windows 2000.

"Users have too many passwords for corporate intranets and Internet access," said John Landwehr, director of product marketing for Gemplus' Internet and information technology group. "GemSafe acts as a universal password for Web, e-mail, and other network transactions."
