Card Briefs: Entrust Adds SET To Public Key System

Entrust Technologies Inc. has announced the commercial release of Entrust/CommerceCA 4.1, an extension of its public key infrastructure system that supports the Secure Electronic Transaction protocol with smart cards.

Entrust said it is the first fully available product on the market that combines digital certificates with Internet debit card services.

With the smart-debit card support "we are cementing our SET leadership role," said Brian O'Higgins, executive vice president and chief technology officer.

The company also announced a successful interoperability test of SET 1.0-standard certificates with Verifone Inc.'s on-line payment systems. Entrust previously completed interoperability testing with GlobeSet Inc. and Trintech Group.

John McGuire, Trintech's chief executive officer, said true interoperability "between all companies in the SET space is essential to the success of secure electronic commerce."
