First Union Corp. has appointed a group administrative officer for its institutional investment management group, First Capital.

Kristine M. Detwiler started Nov. 23 in the newly created job at the $235 billion-asset Charlotte, N.C. She will manage financial, legal, regulatory, human resources, systems, and quality-control operations. Her rank is senior vice president.

Ms. Detwiler was a vice president in client services at Independence Investment Associates, Boston.

First Capital employs 182 people including portfolio managers, analysts, traders, and sales and marketing associates in Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Jacksonville, Fla. It manages $61.1 billion of assets.

The unit opened in September 1997 to provide focused institutional investment management operations and marketing within First Union.

It recently absorbed the same business line of CoreStates Financial Corp., which First Union acquired in April. CoreStates brought $17 billion of assets from institutional clients to First Capital to manage.

Ms. Detwiler, an accountant and a chartered financial analyst, holds an MBA from Dartmouth College's Amos Tuck School.
