Card Briefs: BJ's Wholesale Picks Credit/Debit Processor

Chase Merchant Services said it has won a five-year deal to process credit and debit card transactions for BJ's Wholesale Club Inc.

Chase Merchant Services, a joint venture of Chase Manhattan Bank and First Data Merchant Services Corp., will provide transaction authorization and settlement for the warehouse retailer, which has 91 stores and 4.5 million customers in the eastern United States. BJ's generated $3.2 billion in sales in 1997.

"We are pleased that a well-respected leader in the wholesale club arena has chosen Chase Merchant Services as a strategic partner," said Diane Vogt, chief executive officer of Chase Merchant Services.

John Nugent, president and chief executive officer of BJ's, said the company will be able to take advantage of "competitive credit card processing rates" for its customers.
