In Brief: Seoul Bank Names Manager of N.Y. Branch

South Korea's state-owned Seoul Bank said it promoted William Warren Smith Jr. to general manager of its New York branch.

It is the first appointment of a foreign national to branch manager at any South Korean bank and comes as the government seeks foreign investors for institutions it rescued in an industry bailout last year.

Mr. Smith has served as senior credit officer for the bank's New York operations since September 1996. Previously, he worked at Marine Midland Bank for 22 years. He started his career at Chemical Bank in 1968.
