BankAmerica Appoints Senior Executive in Chicago

BankAmerica Corp. said Thursday that it has named Wilma J. Smelcer, a 25-year company veteran, to be its senior banking executive here, effective immediately.

She succeeds William Goodyear, who announced his resignation last week and plans to leave the company early next year.

Ms. Smelcer, 49, will not take on Mr. Goodyear's responsibilities as president of the private bank. A new president will be named early next year, the company said.

Ms. Smelcer will represent BankAmerica in Chicago business and civic circles. She also is Midwest regional executive for the private bank.

BankAmerica has 4,000 employees in Chicago, the headquarters of its private bank, large corporate lending for the United States and Canada, and commercial banking in the Midwest.

Ms. Smelcer joined the former Continental Bank Corp. in 1973. She has held several posts in corporate and commercial banking and has managed personal trust and the private bank in the Midwest since 1991. She was named executive vice president in 1994.
