Smart Bits: 2d U.S. Agency Order for Card Security Firm

Datakey Inc. said it has received a second order from a U.S. government agency for a smart card-based security system.

Datakey's SignaSure CIP uses a digital signature technique for authenticating and appropriately distributing documents.

The second order is for 500 SignaSure packages and complements the first order of 500 packages and 300 additional smart cards announced on Aug. 31. The program is expected to expand to more than 12,000 users over three years.

The smart cards add a hardware element that strengthens data security application software. Datakey smart cards provide on-card cryptographic key generation, processing, and storage of private cryptographic data, and digital credentials.

In late October, Datakey received a blanket approval from the Department of Commerce to export SignaSure CIP in conjunction with Entrust Technologies Inc. public key infrastructure technology. It can ship strong encryption to all but nine countries without having to get separate licenses for each sale.
