After serving almost five years as Chase Manhattan's CIO-and almost 20 years at the bank-Denis J. O'Leary has been named deputy of retail banking, responsible for the delivery of consumer products and services. He has also been appointed to an expanded Office of the Chairman, which has been renamed the Executive Committee as part of a corporate-wide reorganization.

The move, many analysts say, is a grooming position, suggesting that O'Leary is in line for the chairman's office-some day. Though O'Leary wouldn't comment on such thinking, he did describe his approach to senior management and the value of his technology tenure: "I view myself as someone who creates a vision and who creates change to get to that vision. In the capabilities that help both of these things happen is understanding technology." ... In an effort to become a premier marketing organization, direct banking powerhouse PNC Corp. has created a CIO position and promoted Timothy G. Shack to the post. ... Home Side Lending has a new svp responsible for defining the company's technology and EC strategy in Robert Davis. Before joining Homeside Davis worked for Alltel. Recruited from Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corp., Peter A. Renfro was named svp and CTO of Stewart Online, a leading provider of loan closing document technology.
