Valicert Expands Certificate Trials

Valicert Inc. said it has expanded previously announced field trials for its digital certificate validation service.

The service is designed to ensure that certificates used in Internet commerce have not expired or been revoked-a hazard in the current structure of certificate directories and revocation lists.

"Our expanded partnerships are an indication of our commitment to work with the top organizations that are focused on meeting the information security needs for today's electronic environment," said Valicert chairman and chief technology officer Chini Krishnan.

It was reported last year that Baltimore Technologies of Ireland, Belsign of Belgium, and Thawte, a software company active in South Africa and the United States, would participate in the trial early this year of the validation program known as Valicert Service.

Valicert announced last month that certification vendors Entegrity Solutions, Entrust Technologies, GTE Cybertrust Solutions, and Xcert International would also support the validation clearing house program. Invitations are open to others and Valicert said it will be able to handle more than 30 million certificate validation requests a day.

Baltimore Technologies, meanwhile, entered into a broad agreement to incorporate the Valicert capability throughout its certificate authority product line. Valicert Server, for example, will be integrated into the Unicert CA system. Baltimore will also use Valicert Toolkit, initially in the MailSecure message encryption system based on the S/MIME e-mail protocol.
