Tech Bytes: National Data to Acquire Unit of Data Broadcast

National Data Corp. has signed an agreement to buy CheckRite, a unit of Data Broadcast Corp.

The $15.5 million deal awaits regulatory approval.

CheckRite, based in Salt Lake City, sells point of sale hardware, check authorization, and check collection services.

The unit, which has 37,000 merchant customers nationally, would join Atlanta-based National Data's integrated payment systems division.

CheckRite's annual revenues are about $17 million.

Although the unit is profitable, merchant services are "pretty far afield from our core business," said Mark Imperiale, president of Data Broadcast.

Data Broadcast sells real-time financial information to traders and investors. National Data sells payments software and processing services to banks.
