In Brief: B of A Putting Texas Branches Up for Sale

BankAmerica Corp. Wednesday put its consumer branch and small-business operations in Texas on the block.

Bank of America Texas operates 166 branches in the Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston markets. As of Dec. 31, 1997, Bank of America Texas had assets of $5.3 billion and deposits totaling $4.4 billion.

BankAmerica chairman and CEO David A. Coulter said the San Francisco- based company decided the capital it had invested in the Texas operation could be more effectively deployed elsewhere.

NationsBank Corp., Norwest Corp., and Banc One Corp., which have substantial Texas operations, are the likeliest buyers, said Anthony Davis, an analyst at SBC Warburg Dillon Read.

The bank said the sale would not include BankAmerica's commercial and corporate banking operations in the state.
