Tech Bytes: Digex Inc. Will Run American Century Site

American Century Investments, a manager of mutual funds with $62 billion of assets, has selected Digex Inc. to manage its Internet site, www.americancentury.com.

Citing studies that the number of mutual fund owners using the World Wide Web nearly doubled in 1997, American Century is planning an expansion of on-line services to include brokerage and 401(k) account access.

"An increasingly large percentage of our customers are Internet users and they prefer the convenience and ease of on-line transactions-24 hours a day from the comfort of their homes or offices," said Greg Markovich, American Century vice president for information technology/electronic commerce.

"This is a very large, complex Web site that will serve hundreds of thousands of our customers and is therefore 'mission hyper-critical,'" said Bill Musto, the fund group's senior systems programmer.

Digex, a unit of Intermedia Communications Co. of Tampa, manages Web sites for more than 700 companies including Nike, Kraft Foods, and Nissan.
