Short Takes: Citicorp Marketing Roth IRAs to Gen X

Citicorp has developed a brochure aimed at getting the "twentysomething" market to invest in Roth IRAs.

The brochure, titled, "Get a Roth Rolling ... and Other Ideas On How to Fund Your Retirement," is designed to help young people understand the advantages offered by IRAs, according to the bank.

"We wanted to do something special for this group to encourage them to start thinking ahead," said Rita Hackel Chapin, vice president of marketing at the banking company.

Though some see the so-called Generation X as a generally complacent demographic group, Citicorp executives said they feel these people are concerned about their retirement because of the tenuous state of the Social Security system.

The brochures are available only via a toll-free number that Citicorp is counting on personal finance media to publish. The number will also be displayed when customers use the bank's on-line services.

The brochure explains the differences between traditional and Roth IRAs and illustrates the advantage of starting to invest early.

According to Citicorp, beginning this year, a one-time, $2,000 contribution to a Roth IRA made at age 25 could generate about $43,449 by age 65 (assuming an annual return of 8%), all of which could be withdrawn tax-free.

And if people in this group were able to make a $2,000 contribution every year for the same period, they could accumulate $559,562, also tax- free upon withdrawal.
