Smart Bits: Visa Tailors SET Standard For the Japanese Market

Visa International said it has released an addendum to its SET 1.0 specification to meet unique requirements of the Japanese market.

The addendum, "Support for Japanese Requirements," incorporates the Japanese Payment Options, or JPO, that Internet commerce vendors with international ambitions must accommodate in their SET, or Secure Electronic Transactions, software.

JPO requires a range of payment choices, including single payment, installment payment, and a bonus option. In the last, an amount is payable when a cardholder receives his or her job bonus.

"Because it is based on Japanese commercial customers, 'Support for Japanese Requirements' will make it convenient to conduct credit card transactions over the Internet," said Motoshi Kogure, multimedia planning manager of DC Card Co. Ltd., a Visa Japan member. The document "is essential to ensure the growth of electronic commerce in Japan."
