In Brief: Quicken Web Site Now Takes Applications

Armed with broker licenses in 42 states, Intuit has substantially expanded its Quicken Mortgage Web site.

Since Monday borrowers have been able to apply on-line for a mortgage; in the previous version they could only prequalify for loans. To encourage them to apply on-line, Intuit is offering a rebate-$225 of the closing costs-through the summer.

Alison Berkley, senior product manager at Intuit, said 13,000 customers had prequalified for loans via the original Quicken Mortgage site between November and February. But she said Intuit expects a smaller number of users to make on-line applications.

Eleven lenders are now part of the venture, including Chase Manhattan Corp., Countrywide Credit Industries, Homeside Lending Inc., and North American Mortgage Co.

The Quicken Mortgage site also lists more than 500,000 homes for sale. The data is provided by CyberHomes, a subsidiary of Moore Data, the largest creator of multiple listings systems software.
