Tech Bytes: Visa Joins in Malaysia SET Commerce Trial

Visa International said it is participating in an electronic commerce pilot in Malaysia that will be the first to apply the Secure Electronic Transactions 1.0 standard to business-to-business Visa payments.

Part of Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor initiative, the program will include consumer payments as well as the Visa purchasing card procurement system for business transactions. Previously announced Visa SET pilots in five other Asian nations focus on consumer purchases from retail "cybermerchants."

At the official Malaysian launch in December, Visa demonstrated the use of smart cards for Internet purchases-another aspect of the Super Corridor program that the country hopes will make it a global leader in electronic commerce.

"Opportunities will arise for Malaysian companies to leapfrog into the multimedia technology age," said June Seah, Visa country manager for Malaysia, Brunei, and Guam.
