Capital Briefs: Senate Panel Sets Hearing on FDIC Nominee

The Senate Banking Committee has scheduled an April 22 hearing on Donna A. Tanoue's nomination to be Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. chairman.

Ms. Tanoue, a Honolulu banking lawyer and former commissioner of financial institutions in Hawaii, was nominated by President Clinton in November. Fed Governor Andrew C. Hove Jr. has been acting chairman since Ricki Helfer resigned in June.

Ms. Tanoue is expected to be approved by the Senate but will probably face questions on the wave of giant mergers sweeping the banking industry.
