Tech Bytes: Nortel Unveils Voice Connections on Web

Northern Telecom has introduced a feature that enables computer users to initiate real-time voice connections with businesses by simply clicking a button on the companies' Web pages.

Internet Voice Button is part of a push by Nortel to unify voice and data network infrastructures. The feature lets a Web surfer talk to a real person at a business by placing a call over a second phone line or a commonly available "Voice-over-IP" application that carries phone calls over the Internet.

Nortel Internet Voice Button is completing trials in conjunction with Cary, N.C.-based TriNet Services. Several TriNet customers are examining the application, including Centura Banks of North Carolina, Internet service provider MindSpring Enterprises, Transaction Information Systems of New York, and One Room Systems.
