State Street Unit Beefing Up Operations in Calif.

State Street Corp., Boston, is continuing to expand its retirement investment services and other asset management businesses in the West.

State Street Global Advisors last week named Christopher E. D'Amore managing director of its San Francisco office. It also named Bradley Hilsabeck director of sales.

The pair, who transferred from the Boston office, join nine of the unit's other executives in San Francisco. Last week the subsidiary opened a new, larger office in the city.

Meanwhile, Jillian Rudman, a former member of the subsidiary's San Francisco office, has been named head of sales and marketing for State Street Global Advisors Australia Ltd., Sydney.

The San Francisco outpost markets defined benefit retirement plans to corporations; trusts and investments to wealthy individuals; and investment services to charitable organizations. Now, it plans to expand its institutional client base.

"We think if you're closer to the clients, it will be better for business," said John Serhant, chairman of State Street Global Advisors' investment committee. "Certainly, the West Coast, in terms of clients, is very important to us."

The unit used to pick up clients in 13 western states through referrals from consultants or clients.

It has also won bids from public institutional clients, most notably Calpers, a California state employees retirement system, which hired State Street after it came in with the lowest bid. To ensure the contract was renewed, State Street later lowered the cost of its services to Calpers.
